I Made It!

This week we had a history themed day camp at work. I am so incredibly exhausted, but we made it. It’s over! I think I might have enjoyed it more if I weren’t in charge of it, but I still managed to have fun. Overall, the kids were great; however, I do have to say that home schooled kids are strange. Why do people do that to their kids?

We have a new exhibit, “A Victorian Mourning”, opening in the house on July 1st, so I stayed a little late and helped Lydia put clothing onto mannequins. We have some 19th century mourning clothes on loan and they are really cool. The owner claims that one of the dresses was worn to President Lincoln’s memorial service. The clothes are in pristine condition, so it was fun to help out; although, I was feeling a little loopy and insisted on wearing a hoop skirt while we worked:

Y’all should come and check out the exhibit. It’s really cool and a little creepy. I’ll hook you up with a free visit.

I had great plans of going to see Jucifer last night, but I sat down after I got home and just couldn’t muster up the energy, so I watched the Match Game instead. Thank you Game Show Network (and Netflix) for bringing it back into my life. Will they ever capture the magic of the Match Game again? It should go without saying that Charles Nelson Reilley is my favorite, but I’m loving Betty White at the moment. The disk also contained three shows which included Kirstie Alley as a contestant; apparently she won big money on the star studded Match Game before she was famous. In the getting to know you portion of the show she claims to be an interior designer from Wichita, Kansas. Who knew? I might also add, that Gene Rayburn was totally taken with her, as was that guy from Chips (not "Ponch" or Jon, but the Sgt.) who was on the celebrity panel.

My Day In Music

Today my iPod and I were as one. I had it in shuffle mode, as usual, and it never hit a false note. It somehow managed to perfectly capture my mood—although it’s not something I can really articulate. So, I thought, if I can show you my weekend in pictures, why not my day in music? My playlist:

Ballad of Maxwell Demon—Shudder to Think
Stratford-On-Guy—Liz Phair
Paranoid Android—Radiohead
I Don’t Blame You—Cat Power (meow)
And You Know—The Gossip

Planet Queen—T.Rex
Deceptacon—Le Tigre
Cruel and Jealous Death—Kissing Tigers
Mama Tried—Merle Haggard
Musicology—Prince (because "I have a PhD in advanced body moving!")
Ceremony—New Order
Oh Bondage! Up Yours!—X-Ray Spex
A Girl Like You—Edwyn Collins
Lucky—Radiohead
Smells Like Teen Spirit—Nirvana
EMI—The Sex Pistols
The Passenger—Iggy Pop

Circuitous Thoughts

As I was driving home from work today my iPod shuffle offered up the Beastie Boys. This reminded me that my boy, Adrock (aka Adam Horovitz),
adam.jpg

is now married to Kathleen Hannah (Bikini Kill, Le Tigre):

Shot through the heart and Adrock is to blame. I thought we had something special Adrock. I was also surprised because I thought that Kathleen Hannah was a lesbian. I know these things are not cut and dry, but I was pretty sure that she was making a political choice; I guess she changed her mind. When I got home there was a letter from Graduate Division (the division which oversees graduate students at UCSB). Grad Div is generally hated by many graduate students (although their policies are not as Draconian as when I first started grad school) and so my first though was:
graduate%20division.jpg
(this is a mock-up of a t-shirt that I, along with my friend Jay, wanted to make and sell--the image is from The Black Hole and the quote is from our friend Ted).

Turns out, it was actually a nice letter confirming my fellowship. This got me thinking about my dissertation and my advisor (sigh) Jon Cruz:
Jon.jpg

Jon is totally rad and incredibly supportive; he’s been with me since the beginning. He also uses a lot of vin-diagrams, which I find really charming for some reason. I also love that he sings/quotes corny rock songs to make points or when I would run into to him in the mailroom, hallway, etc. So how do I get back to the Beastie Boys? Well Jon is friends with Tobi Vail, former drummer of Bikini Kill:
tobivail.jpg

Yup, my super cool advisor is friends with Tobi Vail. They both grew up in Washington State—she’s a rock star who is an intellectual and he is an intellectual who rocks (literally and figuratively). This brought me back to Kathleen Hannah (former band mate of Tobi Vail) and how she stole my boyfriend, Adrock (aka Adam Horovitz):

What a bitch.

See how that works?

Another World is Possible

The first ever US Social Forum (spin off of the World Social Forum) will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, June 27-July 1, 2007. The World Social Forum argues that another world is possible; the USSF asserts (and rightly so) that if another world is possible, another US is necessary. It should be inspiring, or maybe just depressing. We'll see. Which reminds me, I heard on the radio recently that New Orleans is officially looking to other countries to get the money they need to rebuild because our government has yet to deliver the bulk of the promised FEMA funds. I'm just a ray of sunshine today. I'm photographing a sunflower farm tomorrow morning with "my boys". I'll try and post shiny happy thoughts and pretty pictures. In the meantime, here is a photograph of graffiti in New Orleans (on the waterfront near the French Quarter)--Viva La Revolucion!:

Weekend Plans

Why is it always feast or famine? There are many weekends when I don't really have that much to do (of a social nature) and then I have multiple offers. Whatever I do I'm just glad that I'll be keeping busy. I'm not in the best frame of mind these days. I haven't been sleeping very well--last night was particularly bad. I'm tired, cranky and, to be honest, a little bit down, and it's only 9:30. Yikes. It's going to be a long day.

Speaking of cranky, my friend Joe is convinved (because I find a certain over-privileged kid in my photo class to be really annoying) that I have a lot of pent-up anger and keeps asking me to join him at the gun range. He's probably right about the pent-up anger, but gun range? I abhore guns, but I'm oddly attracted to the offer. If I weren't such a wimp I would try out for the Atlanta Rollergirls. Now that would help me blow off some steam. My friend Otto has suggested kickboxing.

The Long Lost Band

As I was reading through my old blogs (again) I ran across the following description of my graduate school band, which was unfortunately never more than a concept. I guess it's never too late. The Anarchist Ninja was a person(s) in SB around 00/01 who was responsible for some really excelent, and highly visible, tags on the touristy State Street. He/she/they were also responsible for beheading the Columbus statue at the Knights of Columbus meeting hall. It was really awesome. I have some great pictures somewhere. So here are the details on the band that almost was:

our name: The Evil Ones*

songs:
Anarchist Ninja
What the fuck do you want from me?
Smoke you out (of your cave)
Suspicious Package
deflag

Our first album cover will be a picture of a beheaded Columbus statue.

* we were also considering axis of evil and the evil doers.

Baby Power

Tina is planning on teaching Henry sign language; therefore, he will need to learn a sign for his favorite aunt. Tina has agreed to let me come up with my own sign. I'm leaning towards a black power salute:

black%20power.jpg

This is also known, at least by me, as kitty power:

I guess now it will be baby power (or Aunt Sara):

(This is not Henry)

Any other suggestions?

My Autobiography

My old Blogs also reminded me of my night of glory: From the Bathroom Floor to "Two Fiddy" at Black Jack--I think this should be the title of my autobiography. It's a metaphor for life really. I'd buy that. Wouldn't you? Courtney, do you think the press would publish that?

Memories...

I've been reading back through all of my Blogs and I'm beginning to see why it has taken me a long time to get through graduate school. Blogging has not been a problem, that has been rather sporadic, but every Blog is either about procrastination, playing, watching tv or going to Vegas (they also explain why I have no money.). Anyway, that's cool. I've always said that graduate school is a lifestyle choice. I will finish this school year, however, so everyone mark your calendars for June 2008. You’re all cordially invited to come to the ceremony. Perhaps I’ll “hop” over to Hawaii and celebrate with the Fahey’s when it’s all over. Speaking of, they should be leaving sometime today. Even though I never once went to visit Susan in Washington, I still feel a little sad that she is moving. I liked being in the same time zone. It’s all psychological, I know. Bon voyage and be safe!
