I'm confused
Are people angry about the Kathleen Blee book? She worte another book, Women in the Klan, which is quite good. I guess I have to read it now, because I'm finding the same thing (kind of). I know people get a little weird about so-called "whitness studies", but I personally think it's important. However, I am a bit biased because the work that I am doing would fall into this category. I guess I should read the NYT article to figure out what the big deal is. Who called from Jane magazine?
I wanted to clear up a little confusion about Buffy dreams. There is no way in a million years that I would consider that to be lame. If anything, I'm extremely jealous. I want to have Buffy/Angel dreams!
For once, I don't feel inclined to defend Buffy, I actually was not into this past episode at all. However, I was slightly swayed by Stephanie W.'s connection between this episode and the first season. It could be that I just don't like "stand alone" episodes. It just seemed corny somehow and what was up with the Spike and Buffy sex scene? I guess that was supposed to contain some foreshadowing, but I thought it was weird! One final thought on TV. In general, I am not the biggest Joey (Dawson's Creek for those of you who don't watch) fan, but I am so stoked about the affair with the teacher. Go Joey! I also decided that I am very pro-Jen and Dawson. I think it's the fact that their relationship seems relatively angst free ( at least for now). However, if I really want angst free relationships, I'm most likely watching the wrong show! Oh, and I also LOVE Audrey (it doesn't hurt that she was on Freaks and Geeks)!

Time to get back to some semi-regular blogging.
Chip, I didn't get an invite to the watching or eating blogs, and I would very much like to join. If I were on the Muchies blog I would write about how much I love my new Grit Cookbook. SO far I have made (to varying degree of success):
1) Blondies - a little overdone and I unfortunately now know exactly how full of fat they are!
2) A Golden Bowl - The tofu was close, but not quite there. Does anyone have any tips for getting water out of tofu? I've also realized that a normal serving size is a fraction of what they serve you at the Grit.
3) Yeast Gravy - Just as I remember it!
4) Collard Greens. This has been by far my favorite. I've made it three times! I just can't get enough of it! Yesterday I made some black eyed peas (recipe from Sundays at Moosewood) to go with them. Yum. Yum.
I'm so glad that Bonnie has joined the spy notebook. Welcome! The West Coast crew is growing so big. Bonnie, I love the way you casually mention going to Sundance (as if that's an everyday occurance in the real world)! Did you see any good films? Was Parker Posey a bitch? I've heard that she is.
Courtney, I'm so glad that someone else comes up with alternative lives, but yours are much more detailed and though out than mine. Mine are usually much more half-assed, like moving to New York, but not really knowing what I want to do there. I've thought about becoming a photographer. If you remember the Angel dream, please do share. I wish I had Buffy dreams!
Shelly, what's an average time for running a marathon? I'm so very impressed with your training. I don't think I could run 3 feet. I am truly impressed.
Jenny, I vote for HIPPER, with a "C" sticker added.
Stephanie H. Thanks so much for sharing your pictures of the Coulters. They are all so cute, and the hair! How adorable!
I'm having a bit of a lazy morning after a late night of revisions, but things are looking good. I'm hoping to have a draft completed in a week or so. Then it's party time. Yes, there will still be some work to do, but the revision stage is my absolute favorite time in the writing process. Is that weird?
Okay, that's it for now. Happy Buffy watching!

Hey Chip et all,
I did in fact get that e-mail, but I didn't see it until after I posted the below question. I thought that I deleted the below entry last night, but apparently it didn't work. Sorry.
Anyway, today, Thursday is NOT a beautiful day. All that I have to look forward to is a stack of papers that I'll have to grade over the weekend. At least It's a slow day at work. I had one woman bring in a resume first thing and I haven't had anyone since. This is usually a good thing, as it means that I have time to work on my thesis (with the added bonus of getting paid to do so!), but today I cannot concentrate on anything. I think it's because I missed breakfast because I was running late for work. Oh well, looks like I'll get paid to blog instead. Twenty minutes to go. I think I'll go and try to read The Nation. I'm sure that I can at least get through a movie review.

Okay, didn't we try keeping focused discussion groups before? It seems to me that it worked for a while and then people stopped responding. But, I could be wrong.
I am currently watching Dawson's Creek and Blogging. I love technology! Does anyone else still watch The Creek? Is anyone watching Glory Days? As for Buffy, I have to say that I've actually been enjoying this season a lot. What do other people not like about it? Spike and Buffy? Buffy the Musical? What's not to like? The Willlow addiction thing is a bit bothersome, but I'm dealing.
I just got done with teaching two sections and I'm pretty sure that my students hate me. I usually get along with my students, but this class in general is annoying and I think the students are blaming me. It so hard to be a good teacher and be adored by your students. Oh well.

Just because I'm not paranoid...
Sometimes it seems as though the whole world is conspiring against me (some might call this paranoia, I call it perception). Anyway, I TRIED to blog and I couldn't get to the spynotebook, but realizing that this really is no excuse, I am now writing my blog in WORD and will hopefully transfer it later today.
Blogger is once again proving to be an excellent procrastination tool. I am supposed to be working on my thesis right now, but I was irresistibly drawn to the spynotebook. However, I probably shouldn't waste too much time, as I am on a strict time line. I must turn in a draft of my thesis in order to go to Vegas next month. This rule is firm. However, I did get two articles read this morning and I spent roughly 4 hours writing yesterday (plus a few hours organizing material), so I feel that I'm justified in taking a few moments for all of you.
Life in Santa Barbara is much as usual. Since I have been back (roughly 2 weeks) I have been bowling (I'm totally up for a bowling team by the way) I've seen numerous movies (Lord of the Rings, In the Bedroom and Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and consumed numerous alcoholic beverages. Additionally, I played Charades for the first time in many, many years and it was quite enjoyable. This was after consuming potato pancakes and cabbage in honor of my friend John's Polish heritage. Lastly, I went to Ojai for the first time. For those you who are unfamiliar with California Ojai is seen as the center of new age thinking and it also happens to be quite beautiful. In fact, Capra chose Ojai to represent Shangri-La in his movie Paradise Lost. It is also where Dylan would go to visit his mom on Beverly Hills 90210. It was a lovely day and I acquired a vintage dress, scarf and two shirts for the low, low price of $4. I love thrift shopping! Plus, I get the added bonus of not supporting current unfair labor practices in the clothing industry.
Now I must return to my work. After three hours of helping students locate their thesis statement, I need to go and refine mine.

I would SO give up TV for a year if someone would give me 5,000 dollars. Any takers?

Shelly, I love your domestic vision. When you find this place can I move in? It sounds fabulous!
Stephanie W., glad to see you back.
Tina, I don't recognize that guy, but I was only there for four years during the 90's.
Many of you do such a good job blogging and I enjoy reading about the all the events in your lives - crazy neighbors, unemployment, differently abled cookies, and yet I still don't think anyone wants to read about MY life, but here it goes --
I've almost made it through the first week of the quarter, and so far so good. I've mainly been doing busy work, buying books, checking out classes getting through the first section and of course creating a schedule that is too ambitious and sets me up for failure. However, I am beyond excitement today because Samara is coming back into town. I haven't seen her since the 3rd of January, so it's been a while. I think we'll have to go and get a drink to celebrate. I also plan to go see the new Wes Anderson movie and go bowling, and we have tentatively set up our first band practice for Saturday afternoon. We're thinking about adding a tap dancer to the act. What do you guys think? Well, now I'm off to lecture and to buy a book for class.

Oh my god! I am so glad that I made the cut between good spies and lazy spies. It could have easily gone either way! However, I must (like Big Mike) claim my laziness, but those of you who know me well already know this. So, I'm back in Santa Barbara and SLOWLY getting back into the swing of things. I had a dream last night (I was very unfotunately NOT wearing "break" shoes) in which I ran into one of my advisors (Sarah). She asked me if a had a draft of my thesis to give to her. I did not and she shook her head at me and said that this was most unfortunate and that we needed to talk. This was after the portion of the dream in which I was part of a big performance that was also a class project (Tina and Amy were there for sure, but I can't remember anyone else). There was a huge audience and we sang and danced. It was very well received. This is a sign that I should:
A) get to work, because yesterday was in fact a deadline that I set up with my advisor
B) keep pushing forward with the band, now semi-officially named "The Evil Doers"
C) take a photgraphy class (photography was also a feature of the dream)
D) adopt a Monkey
E) go to "Scarrieokie 2002"
F) all of the above
You be the judge. For right now I am going to work out.

I've been in Georgia for just about three weeks, and I can say that I am truly ready to go back to Santa Barbara. It doesn't help that I haven't really gotten out, and once I finally decided to go out the bloody snow and ice fucked me over! Oh well. I leave on Satuday, and I think it's about time. So much work to be done and not a damn bit of it got done while I was at home. I did get in some quality time with my family. I hope that everyone had a very happy new year...
