I don't blog for a while and all hell breaks lose. Okay, not really, but it seems as though my Sister (Tina for those of you not in the know) is on a bit of a bender for her birthday. More power to ya Sis! Speaking of Teener, she's coming to visit me next weekend. This will be my first official visit from anyone in the year and a half that I've been living in Santa Barbara. Now I finally get to do all of the tourist stuff that I've been putting off. I'm thinking Heart Castle for sure - I watched "Citizen Kane" this weekend in order to prepare. Oh and get this there's a Dutch version of Helen, GA nearby, we might just have to see how it truly compares to our little Bavarian wonder. However, I should add that while Solvang has become a bit of a tourist trap it was indeed settled by Danes, but do they have funnel cakes, The Ye Olde Candle Shoppe and This Christmas Shoppe -- I think not.

Timmy is Weak

Okay, I just discovered "Iron Chef" in Spanish. It's even funnier than in English. That show is so fucking cool. I'm almost done with my grading, but I haven't been able to get to any of the other many tasks that I've been putting off for forever. There's always something. In other news, I called Susan the other night and she seemed a bit weird, like there was something going on and she couldn't talk. It made me quite suspicious. Susan are you out there? Are you okay? I watch way too much television. Speaking of, I must admit that "Passions" isn't doing it for me like it used to. I've pretty much been sticking with the tried and true "Days of Our Lives." I mean come on, "Passions" may be cool, but no one has been possessed by the devil. By the way, I want to go on the record about "Timmy." I said as early as this summer that he seemed a little soft, and I might add that Chip yelled at me, but was I right or what? Susan was there and she can back me up on this (maybe) It's okay Chip I forgive you.

My Poor Saturn

Well, I just found out that there was $6,000 worth of damage to my Saturn. Fortunately, the driver of the other car is accepting full liability, or rather his insurance company is. Praise the lord! I fear that the accident has rattled my brain, because I can't seem to keep anything in my head, but otherwise I'm still doing okay.

I moved up to the forth floor of my building today. It's an okay office, but I'm surrounded by political scientists, which would necessarily be bad, but these particular ones are extremely conservative. Yikes! At least I have my fellow Sociologists to protect me.

I've just discovered a whole new world of blogging. I didn't realize that there were message boards with discussions about other people's blogs and whatnot. Chip was right, this is wicked awesome. I'm in big trouble, I can't get addicted to yet another avoidance mechanism. Nothing much to report on this end. I just got a stack of 48, 12 page papers to grade so I won't have much of a life for the next week, but then the would imply that I usually have a life.

My Life as a TV Movie of the Week

I had a nice, long and I might add funny blog that I wrote earlier, but it seems to have disappeared. I will briefly catch you up. I've decided that if my life was a poorly written movie that the audience would have figured out my fate by now. Yesterday, only 4 days after my 2/9 posting and 20 minutes after a joke warning from my cousin, I got into a car accident with one of the aforementioned California drivers. The foreshadowing was way out of control. I am fine, just a little sore from the seat belt and the air bag. The prognosis for my poor little Saturn is still unclear. The upshot is that Student Health Services gave me some Valium and I am flying high. Apparently, they give this stuff out like candy over there. I've got to start going in more often.

February 10, 2000

I'm just finishing with my Stats nightmare -- only 5 weeks to go! I'm definitely feeling the mid quarter slump. Sometimes Santa Barbara feels like such a depressing, life-sucking wasteland. It's certainly a nice place to visit, but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about living here. Oh how I long for the east coast sometimes!! By the way, I ran into my advisor yesterday and it wasn't pretty, but it has prompted me to do some work.

February 9, 2000

Well, well, well. Two days in a row. Pretty impressive, huh? I do believe that it's raining. I must say Californians are pathetic when it come to the rain, or what they call "weather". They really can't handle it, particularly when it comes to driving in the rain.

I had a realization in the last month that kind of scared me -- I love true crime novels. I had always wondered about people who liked to read about these horrible crimes, but I just finished "Helter Skelter" and I found it to be absolutely enthralling. Should I be worried?

what I learned in graduate school

Well, first I have to say that I feel really lame. I just checked out the journals for the first time in a while, and it seems as if I'm the only loser who isn't keeping up with my entries. Not to mention everyone else has jazzed their page up. This is what I get for being in grad school -- it really sucks your will to live, much less post journal entries. It does, however, have its cool moments. I'm taking a seminar on theories of popular culture and we spent last week reading about Star Trek pornography; this is also commonly know as "Slash" fan fiction. Slash exists in a variety of forms these days, but Kirk and Spok is where it all began. Anyway, I was unaware that Spok has a green, double ridged penis. This is what I'm learning in grad school. I'm also TAing for a class which is looking at gender and race in film. This has also been great fun. The only trouble is that my MA has not been worked on at all. I'm avoiding my advisor like the plague and praying that I can find some time to transcribe ASAP.

On the non-school side -- I recently went down to LA to see the Kids in the Hall - They were TERRIFIC! I highly recommend that you guys go see them if you get the chance. I also recommend that everyone go see the Cradle Will Rock. It's a great movie with great politics. Later, Sara
